A story of a Shugsep Nun:
"At the age of seventeen I had offered my hair to the lama, a symbol of ordination to become a nun. Since my early childhood I strongly felt this longing in my heart and I knew I must do something truely useful in this lifetime.
In 1989, I participated in the peaceful demonstration in Lhasa, Tibet, where upon I was arrested and imprisoned. In prison the Chinese authorities interrogated and tortured me everyday for six months. I was repeatedly stripped naked, thrown on a cold cement floor and beaten with rods and whips until I fell unconscious. When they released me, I was severely sick and was immediately hospitalized for over one month to recover from the beatings. After hospitalization I returned to Shugsep nunnery, where the Chinese police had moved in and constantly harassed and interrogated me. They forced me to be re-educated and to grow my hair. It was impossible for me to stay there; I had no religious or political rights. So I decided to flee to India. The entire journey by foot, I still felt great pains from the torturing. After twenty-eight days of travelling I arrived in Dharamsala and received a blessing from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the dream of every Tibetan. Soon after I joined Shugsep nunnery in India. I did not want to leave Tibet, but I felt as if I had no choise."
